Global Homelessness Intern

We’re looking for a Global Homelessness Intern.

This role is an ideal opportunity for a candidate considering a career in the charity sector to contribute to a range of projects at an established international charity responding to homelessness globally.  As part of Depaul International’s International Programmes and Partnerships Team, the successful candidate will help to advance DPI’s strategy to address homelessness. They will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience across a variety of DPI’s priority areas, including communications, advocacy and programme support. It is also an opportunity to learn more about the homelessness sector and homelessness as a global issue. 

Responsibilities may include supporting DPI’s Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) project, developing communications materials on a range of topics, and helping to advance DPI’s advocacy priorities.  

DPI is currently exploring ACT as an effective intervention to strengthen support for people experiencing homelessness, working with teams in the UK, the USA and Ireland to test this across a range of services. The intern will support this project, contributing to the development of engaging reporting formats which highlight project progress. This will involve gathering and organising data and stories in a visually compelling way.  

At DPI, we’re also advancing our advocacy efforts, and we’re interested in pursuing global advocacy opportunities focused on the intersection of homelessness, health and education. People experiencing homelessness face far worse health outcomes, higher risk of infectious diseases, substance abuse and suicide, and significantly shorter life expectancy. Meanwhile, children experiencing homelessness are more likely to miss school, perform poorly, and become at risk for trafficking, assault, and other forms of victimisation. The intern will assist in mapping and monitoring health- and/or education-focused advocacy opportunities, as well as scoping case study possibilities from across the Group to support this priority.  

The intern will also have the opportunity to design an internal webinar for Depaul International Week, an annual celebration of shared learning for staff from around the world. The webinar may showcase learning and impact from the ACT project, and the intern will play a key role in shaping the session. This will involve creating an engaging session plan, ensuring that the session is informative and accessible for staff, and coordinating with Depaul’s global teams to identify and brief speakers. 

Other responsibilities might include: 

• Further support to DPI’s International Programmes and Partnerships team as required, including communications support, assisting with ongoing advocacy initiatives and providing programmes support. 

• Supporting the day-to-day operations of a small international charity. 

Person specification

• Proactive attitude, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently. 

• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks.

• Passion for social justice and ending homelessness.  

• Comfortable working with teams across different countries.  
• Willingness to learn and an interest in developing skills across communications, advocacy and programme support.

Research partner

We’re looking for a research partner to help us strengthen the visibility of homelessness within global and national climate policy and finance debates by generating credible evidence, identifying gaps and highlighting concrete opportunities for action.

Depaul International (DPI) oversees a group of leading homelessness charities, working across the world since 1989 with a mission to end homelessness, supporting the most marginalised and improving the lives of those affected by homelessness. The UN estimates that globally up to 3 billion people lack decent housing, over 1 billion live in informal settlements, and at least 330 million face absolute homelessness. Part of our new and ambitious strategy is securing global attention, action and financing for tackling homelessness, addressing the gap in global action that we currently see. Homelessness is not included in the SDGs, has limited international collaboration and coordination, and is grossly underfunded internationally.

As DPI’s recent report – ‘The Case for Global Action on Homelessness: why Homelessness can no longer be ignored in climate, health and education agendas’ – highlights, climate change is an increasingly important and under recognised driver of homelessness globally. Climate related impacts contribute to homelessness through:

• Direct loss and destruction of housing due to extreme weather events (floods, storms, wildfires) resulting in displacement and homelessness
• Slow onset impacts such as sea level rise, desertification and environmental degradation impacting migration, particularly from rural and island communities into urban areas with insufficient housing and support systems, resulting in homelessness
• Disruption of housing markets and affordability, including pressures linked to migration, reconstruction and insurance withdrawal
• Compounding vulnerabilities for people experiencing street homelessness, who are disproportionately exposed to heatwaves, storms, air pollution, water insecurity and climate related health risks
